“KARG”
Larksfield Place Plans to Welcome One-of-a-Kind Exhibit
Featuring Monumental Glass and Steel Sculptures
Larksfield Place Retirement Communities Inc. is planning for the first exhibition of “KARG,” a display of eight monumental crafted glass and steel sculptures by renowned American sculptor Rollin Karg. The display opens to the public on Thursday, July 1, with events kicking off at 7 p.m.
Karg, a well-known glass artisan from Kechi, Kan., has created eight glass and steel sculptures ranging in size from 7 to 14 feet tall – all designed specifically for display on the Larksfield Place campus. “Sometimes an opportunity/challenge comes along that you just can't say no to. I had been thinking of these new pieces, and when this came up, it seemed like a perfect match. This project has spurred me to new levels,” said Karg.
The exhibit includes the outdoor monumental pieces as well as a display of smaller crafted glass and steel works in the Larksfield Place Gallery. The July 1 festivities will get underway with the opening of the indoor gallery at 7 p.m. Unveiling of the outdoor sculptures is at 7:30 p.m. followed by a ceremony to light the outdoor sculptures at 9:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public.
“With sculptures that soar upward more than 14 feet, these playful, colorful pieces will be like nothing seen before in the Wichita area,” said Terry Asla, who is coordinating the exhibit. “These whimsical works will delight the eye and bring a sense of wonder to all who view them.”
Exhibit details: Outdoor sculpture exhibit runs July 1 to Dec. 31. The indoor gallery exhibit runs July 1 to Aug. 31. Both exhibits are open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A map with locations of outdoor artwork, which will be located across the Larksfield Place campus at 7373 E. 29th St. North in Wichita, will be available in the main lobby.
“What Does Age Have to Do With It?”
Larksfield Place Symposium Provides Valuable Information for Seniors
WICHITA, Kan., Oct. 23, 2009 . . . How do some people manage to age so gracefully? What can you do to help yourself be in that group? Those are just a couple of the questions that will be discussed at the Oct. 23 Larksfield Place symposium, “What Does Age Have to Do With It?”
The symposium, which will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m. and wrap-up at 2:30 p.m., will feature presentations by two of our region’s leading health care providers for seniors: Jerry Old, M.D. and Stephen Benson, Ph.D.
In addition to the presentations, attendees will have an opportunity to experience hands-on demonstrations of fitness for seniors, including strength building Vita Bands, better balance skills and an introduction to Exerstriders, which provide a total body workout.
Dr. Old’s presentation, “Vintage People – The Secrets of Successful Aging,” will kick off the symposium with tips on how to get better with age. After his presentation, the Larksfield Place Fitness Club staff will lead the hands-on demonstrations. After a break for lunch, Dr. Benson will wrap up the event with his insightful “Caring for the Caregiver” presentation.
“Larksfield Place strives to provide the best resources on topics important to mature adults, including how to stay healthy and how to take great care of ourselves as we age,” said Amy Hall, Director of Larksfield Place Fitness Club. “This symposium is designed to offer a lot of useful information as well as a lot of fun, hands-on demonstrations. We want everyone to take away new ideas they can incorporate into their daily lives right away.”
